Instructions to Authors

1. Aims and Scope

Korean Journal of Applied Entomology (KJAE) publishes scientific articles on entomology, nematology, acarology, invertebrates and their related subjects. The usual prerequisites for publication will be originality, clarity and significance as relevant to a better understanding of those disciplines mentioned above. The types of publication are original article, short communication, review & invited review, invited article, and special contribution, special contribution, and letter.

A short communication is for a concise, but independent report representing a significant contribution to KJAE. It may include hypothesis or basic data for further studies with not requiring complete final conclusions. Also, it can include rapid communication and technical note. A technical note is an article giving a brief description of a technique or procedure as well as referring to the modification of a technique, procedure or equipment of interest to KJAE. A rapid communication is a brief report with completed structure for the purpose of rapid announcements to readers.
It should be no more than 2500 words in English and 8,000 letters in Korean, and could include two figures or tables. Short communications are also sent to peer review.
A letter may provide new insight, make corrections, or offer alternate theories about content printed in the journal. Also this type can include a short descriptions of important current research findings including pest issues. The length should be in two printed pages, with Abstract, Content (main body) and Literature Cited. Detail data can be posted online as a form of supplementary information.


KJAE allows a manuscript with Free Style. This type does not require the guideline of KJAE, but should be in the scope. The type of Free style can include a preliminary manuscript and reports of research projects with the originality, clarity and significance. It will be promptly evaluated by a review group of KJAE before formal review, and required to obey the guideline when submits the first revision.

2. Ethical Guidelines

For information on ethical guideline for KJAE is described at http://www.entomology2.or.kr. For the policies on the research and publication ethics not stated in the instructions, 'Guidelines on good publication (http://publicationethics.org/)' can be applied.
Manuscripts including human subjects or animal experimentation must have the approval of IRB (Institutional Review Board) or IACUC (Institutional animal care and use committee), with describing in the section of Materials and Methods. It is recommended that "personal agreement on the use of information" is noted in the materials and methods, when studies were conducted by such as questionnaires using personal information.
When reporting new species, LSID (life science identifier) must be indicated in the Result section.
Statements for authorship position and contribution should be described before the Literature Cited.

3. Copyright Transfer Agreement

The journal follows an open access policy. The Korean Society of Applied Entomology (KSAE) retains the exclusive copyright to reproduce and distribute including reprints, translations, photographic reproductions, microform, electric form (offline, online) or any other reproductions of similar natures for all KSAE publications. The society or the authors to reproduce and distribute the works it publishes, as long as the society the society or the authors are properly attributed and the content in not plagiarized, misrepresented, or used for commercial purposes. If the journal is distributed, in whole or in part, for non-commercial use, KJAE should be cited for reference. 4. Author's Checklist

Corresponding authors should confirm their manuscript according to the author's checklist of KJAE before submission. The author's checklist can be accessed at http://www.entomology2.or.kr.

5. Peer Review Policy

This journal adopts double-blind peer review. The detail policies are presented at http://www.entomology2.or.kr.

6. Manuscript Submission

6-1. Members or non-members can publish their papers in KJAE, as the contents are in the scope of KJAE (see #1).
6-2. Manuscripts have not been published already and they must not be under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere.
6-3. The language of manuscript should be Korean or English in Word document (.doc, docx) or Hangeul Word Processer (.hwp). Manuscript should be sent to Editorial community of KSAE by E-mail (office@entomology.or.kr). Figures or photos can be embedded in the native word processor file or may be attached separately. The submission of final revised manuscript follows the same rule above.

7. Structure of Manuscript

7-1. General rule
The manuscripts that do not follow the instruction of KJAE can be requested to be corrected by the Editorial community and reviewing processes are conducted after the correction of errors. Manuscripts should be prepared by using computer-based word processer.

Manuscripts, including the references, should be double-spaced on A4 paper size. The standard layout is 25 lines with each 40 letters in Korean and 25 lines with each 70 letters in English.

Manuscripts should include, in the following order, Title, Name and Address of the author, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements and Literature Cited.

7-2. Title Page
• Title page of manuscript only includes article title in Korean and English, name of authors, affiliations and address of authors. Indicate all affiliations with a lower-case superscript letter immediately after the author's name and in front of the appropriate address.
• Corresponding author should be noted on upper right side of title page. Clearly indicate corresponding author name, address, telephone and fax numbers (with country and area code) as well as the e-mail address.

7-3. Abstract
• The second page of manuscript includes Abstract and Key Words.
• Korean and English abstract should be provided in all manuscripts.
• The abstract is a concise and factual form of whole manuscript. It should be less than 250 words in English and 800 letters in Korean. One paragraph is allowed without numbering or subdivision.
• Immediately after the abstract of Korean and English, provide about 5 keywords.

7-4. Introduction
• Start without heading title ('Introduction').
• State the objectives of the work and provide an adequate background, avoiding a detailed literature survey or a summary of the results.

7-5. Materials and Methods
• Provide sufficient detail to allow the work to be reproduced by other researchers.

7-6. Results
• Results should be clear and concise. Subsection titles are provided when required.
• The data presented in tables or figures do not duplicate results described elsewhere in the article.

7-7. Discussion
• Discussion is justifying the results. This should explore the significance of the results of the work, not repeat them.
• A combined Results and Discussion section is often appropriate.

7-8. Citation in text
• Published papers or papers in press can be cited in text.
• Unpublished results and personal communications are not recommended in the reference list, but may be mentioned in the text.
• Citation in text should be English form with the styles as followings:

- Single author: (Kim, 1997)
- Two authors: (Park and Byun, 1997)
- Three or more authors: (Weaver et al., 1989)
- Groups of references: (Campion et al., 1989; Lee, 1995); should be listed first chronologically, then alphabetically; More than one reference from the same author(s) in the same year must be identified by the letters 'a', 'b', 'c', etc.
- Papers in press: (Cho, J.R., in press)
- Unpublished papers: (Park, K.T. and M.H. Lee, unpublished observation)
- Personal information: (Lee, B.Y., personal communication)

7-9. Reference List (Literature Cited)
• References should be written in English form.
• English form is only allowed in case of non-English papers. Non-English title should be translated to English. The original languages that cannot be translated to English may be notated as alphabet letters based on the sound.
• References should be arranged first alphabetically and then further sorted chronologically if necessary.
• Reference to a journal publication: Lee, M.L., Lee, M.H., 1997. Amplified mitochongrial DNA identify four species of Tetranychus mites (Acarina: Tetranychidae) in Korea. Korean J. Appl. Entomol. 36, 30-36.
• Reference to a chapter in an edited book: Campion, D.G., Critchley, B.R., McVeigh, L.J., 1989. Mating disruption, in: Jutsum, A.R., Gordon, R.F.S. (Eds.), Insect pheromone in plant protection. John Wiley & Sons, New York, pp. 89-119.
• Reference to a book: Wigglesworth, V.B., 1972. The principles of insect physiology, 7th ed. Chapman and Hall, London.

7-10. Tables and Figures
• Tables and Figures should be produced in English and collected at the end of the manuscript.
• The captions of Figures and Tables should be detail and clear to understand their meaning without reference to the text.
• Supply captions separately, not attached to the figure.
• Figures (Illustrations) should be clear in a finished form for reproduction, and understandable when they are reduced for page fitting.
• Color publication is acceptable, but authors should pay the charge.

7-11. Units
• SI units should be used principally.
• Provide single space between word and Unit except of % and ℃.

8. Others

• Final decision of publication of manuscripts is decided in Editorial community after peer reviews.
• The corresponding author incurs a publication fee upon completion of the paper's publication. This fee amounts to KRW (₩) 300,000 for notes, short communications, original articles, and reviews (black and white, based on a 6-page rate), with an additional charge of KRW (₩) 150,000 per color page. For additional pages beyond the 6 pages, there will be an additional charge of KRW (₩) 50,000 per page.
• Upon request, thirty offprints are provided to the author. Offprints are priced at KRW (₩) 10,000 (black and white) / 15,000 (color) per page.
• The page charge for invited articles or review articles is determined by the Editorial Board, if deemed necessary.
• Other issues that are not listed in this guideline follow the decision of Editorial community.
