Identification Condition of According to Pre-treatment Conditions of Protaetia Brevitarsis Defecation-Induction Feeding Using Processing By-Products
Abstract
White-spotted flower chafer beetle (Protaetia brevitarsis) larvae, which are used for food and medicinal purposes, are customarily fed processing by-products such as glutinous rice and bean curd refuse to induce defecation during pre-treatment. This practice helps to reduce production costs, increase nutritional value, and mitigate unpleasant taste. In this study, the effects of using defecation-inducing feed materials for larvae, such as red ginseng, goji berry pomace, garlic by-products, and black garlic pomace, were investigated, and optimal pre-treatment conditions were established. To this end, we examined defecation-inducing feeding, weight loss, survival rates, and indicator substances. The fiber content of larvae fed processing by-products was 9.91% lower than that of untreated (fasting) larvae across all treatments. Using regression analysis of the daily weight loss and survival rates of larvae, we estimated the optimal number of larvae for a defecation-inducing feeding container measuring 264×194×192 mm (W×H×D) based on the processing by-product input. The number of larvae feeding on red ginseng and black garlic meals were 180 and 175, respectively. This was higher than the number of larvae in other treatment groups. The total ginsenoside, betaine, and pyruvate contents after defecation-inducing feeding, based on the larvae killing and freeze-drying methods, were highest when frozen at -20°C followed by freeze-drying. In particular, the total ginsenoside content was significantly higher in the red ginseng meal group that underwent freeze-drying after freezing compared to the other treatment groups. Therefore, it is considered most appropriate to use red ginseng meal as a defecation-inducing feed during pre-treatment, followed by freezing and freeze-drying.
