Abstract

We investigated the developmental characteristics of Scotinophara lurida, a major rice pest. We provide moisture to the pest eggs using wet cotton, which was essential for egg development. Initially, first-instar nymphs developed into second-instar when provided only with water. However, the second-instar nymphs did not reach the third instar stage when only water was provided. The first-instar nymphs were fed eight different species of Poaceae, and the survival rates of individuals reaching adulthood in rice, sorghum, and wheat at the heading stage were 90.0%, 30.0%, and 26.7%, respectively, but only 6.7% for barley and 3.3% for Italian and barnyard millets. Individuals fed corn at the vegetative stage, died before attaining third instar, and in individuals fed common millet at the heading stage, died before adulthood. Moreover, Individuals who were fed rice at the early tillering stage, their survival rate to adulthood was 25%, which was lower than that of individuals fed rice at the heading stage. The developmental periods for the fourth- and fifth-instar nymphs of S. lurida fed rice plants at the heading stage were the shortest compared to those fed other Poaceae plants, averaging 8.5 and 12.1 d, respectively. Adult weight of S. lurida fed rice plants at the heading stage was 50.91 mg on average, which was higher than S. lurida fed rice plants at the early tillering stage and those fed sorghum and wheat plants at the heading stage. Collectively, these results suggest that rice plants are suitable in the heading stage for the development and survival of S. lurida nymphs.
