Efficient Rearing Method for Bradysia impatiens (Diptera: Sciaridae) using Kidney Beans in Laboratory
Abstract
The fungus gnat, Bradysia impatiens, is an important pest of greenhouse crops and causes severe economic damage. Therefore, a simple and effective mass-rearing method is needed for various research on the control of B. impatiens. This study was conducted to develop a mass-rearing method for B. impatiens using kidney beans, a host that can be purchased cheaply on the market. The number of eggs was investigated in relation to the soaking periods and the number of kidney beans. As a result, the highest number of eggs was 108.2 for kidney beans soaked for three days, and the number of eggs increased as the number of kidney beans increased. In addition, the number of eggs, hatching rate, pupation rate, eclosion rate, survivorship, and developmental period from egg to adult were compared between the medium with kidney beans soaked for three days and the potato disk medium, previously known as a rearing medium for B. impatiens. The number of eggs was more than 8.5 times higher on kidney bean medium than on potato disk medium, and pupation rate, eclosion rate, and survivorship were also higher. The developmental period was 11.7 days on kidney bean medium, which was about 7 days earlier than on potato disc medium.
