Abstract

From 2019 to 2023, pests causing damage to bananas (Musa spp.) and coffee (Coffea spp.) cultivated in Jeju and Jeollanamdo province were investigated. A total of eight insect pests were found in bananas. The Kanzawa spider mite, Tetranychus kanzawai, was prevalent in most banana orchards, infesting leaves at high densities annually and causing significant damage. Citrus mealybug (Planococcus citri), tobacco cutworm (Spodoptera litura), and tea tortrix (Adoxophyes honmai) occurred sporadically, mainly attacking the leaves. Although no pests directly damaged the fruits, the banana russet mite (Helionothrips femoralis), causing white streaks and rusty discoloration on the banana fruit surface, was first discovered in Jeju in 2022 and confirmed in banana farms in Wando and Haenam, Jeollanam-do in 2023. Five pest species were observed in coffee. Black citrus aphid (Toxoptera aurantii), citrus mealybug, and tea tortrix were the most prevalent, causing substantial annual damage. In farms located in Jeollanam-do, the two-striped slug (Limax marginatus) also caused some damage to leaves and fruits, and the flatid planthopper (Metcalfa pruinosa) occurred on some trees.
