Abstract

The genus Helina Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 is one of the largest groups belonging to the subfamily Phaoniinae in the family Muscidae, comprising more than 540 species worldwide. In this taxonomic study, the genus Helina was recorded first time from the Korea with following three unrecorded species: H. deleta (Stein, 1914), H. evecta (Harris, 1780), and H. subpubiseta Xue, 1986. Taxonomic information, morphological photographs, and an identification key to the Korean species were provided.

The HelinaRobineau-Desvoidy, 1830 is the second largest genus in the Muscidae, with more than 540 species recorded worldwide. This genus is widely distributed throughout the world, but has the highest species diversity in the Palaearctic region (Zhang et al., 2011;Xue and Sun, 2015). Despite its wide distribution, no species in this genus have been previously documented in the Korean fauna.

These flies are moderately anthophilous and easily observed sitting on sunlit trunks, branches or foliage along hedgerows and forests edges (Eilenberg et al., 2022). Also, Skidmore (1985) noted that many of them develop within moss or humus soil, occasionally straying into adjacent materials such as cow dung.

In this study, we present the first record of the genus Helina Robineau-Desvoidy in the Korean peninsula, with three previously unrecorded species: H. deleta (Stein, 1914), H. evecta (Harris, 1780), and H. subpubisetaXue, 1986. Taxonomic information and morphological photographs of the Korean species are provided.

    Materials and Method

All voucher specimens examined in this paper are deposited in the collection of Department of Plant Medicine at Kyungpook National University, Daegu, Korea. Morphological characteristics of adults and genitalia were observed under stereoscopic (Olympus SZX 16) and compound (Olympus BX50) microscopes. Photography were taken using a Michrome 16 CMOS camera (Tucsen, Fujian, China).

The following abbreviations for the province were used: HB (Hamgyeongbuk-do), IC (Incheon Metropolitan City), GW (Gangwon-do), CB (Chungcheongbuk-do), CN (Chungcheongnam- do), DG (Daegu Metropolitan City), GB (Gyeongsangbuk- do), GN (Gyeongsangnam-do), GJ (Gwangju Metropolitan city), JB (Jeollabuk-do), JN (Jeollanam-do), JJ (Jeju-do).
