Abstract

Allium dumebuchum H.J.Choi (Liliales: Liliaceae) is a Korean endemic Allium species with high conservation and exhibition value. However, studies on pollinators that directly influence reproduction have mainly focused on crop species within the genus, and information on flower-visiting insects associated with native plants such as A. dumebuchum during the flowering remains limited. Therefore, this study analyzed differences in the composition of flower-visiting insect communities associated with A. dumebuchum planted in gardens at the Korea National Arboretum by year and garden, as well as their relationships with abiotic environmental factors. A total of 1,966 individuals belonging to 157 species, 31 families, and 6 orders were recorded. Syrphidae (Diptera) was the dominant family, and insect species diversity and richness differed significantly between gardens. Non-metric multi-dimensional scaling and permutational multivariate analysis of variance showed significant differences in community composition by year, garden, and their interaction. Similarity percentage analysis indicated that the major species contributing to differences between gardens varied by year. Environmental fitting analysis revealed that temperature, but not illumination, was significantly associated with community composition. Generalized linear model analysis showed that several major species were significantly related to temperature or illumination, with more species responding to temperature. These results suggest that A. dumebuchum serves as a floral resource for diverse flower-visiting insects and that its insect community varies with garden environment, annual conditions, and abiotic environmental factors. This study provides baseline information for understanding flower-visiting insect community characteristics associated with A. dumebuchum planted in gardens and for enhancing insect diversity.
